Nike Air GX 20th Anniversary Edition

Let me start this off by saying I loved this boot. It was the first boot I ever owned that featured a color other than black and white. I got this pair of boots while playing with the US Olympic team and I thought I was the business. Besides the pop of blue that was heavily featured on this boot, it also had a wavy stitching that gave it some flavor and the sole plate was really different than anything I had ever played in. After getting a pair of these boots at an Olympic team camp, I went back to my club team in Holland and felt like an entirely new player (fresh boots will do that to a young kid).

And the thing with this pair of boots was they were flashier than what we were used to wearing, but still not the flashiest of boots. As a defensive midfielder/center back, I couldn't really wear boots that were too flashy. That's how things were then. We left the real flashy boots to real flashy players. On that Olympic team, at that time - that player was Brian West

Nike Air GX 20th Anniversary

Cut to 20 years later and Nike is bringing these back in an updated and modern version. Nike is referring to this new boot as a limited edition Hypervenom GX. According to the Swoosh:

nike-air-gx

Now on the 20th anniversary of the Air GX and in celebration of the Montebelluna team that created it, Nike is launching a limited-edition Hypervenom GX. The boots feature supple Alegria leather as well as Nike Flyknit, merging traditional materials with modern technology in a boot that is 35% lighter than the original Air GX.

The Hypervenom GX retains the iconic lines of the Air GX, though without the quilting that originally perforated the leather. The upper also stays true to the asymmetrical lacing of the 1997 model, but without the oversized tongue rendered unnecessary thanks to advancements in lacing.

Numerous details honor the Monetebelluna team, several members of which have been with Nike since the launch of the first Air GX. The Montebelluna crest accompanied by the colors of the Italian flag appear on the shoe bag, sockliner, and heel. Italy’s flag also appears as a woven label on the lateral side of the boot. The Alegria leather symbol on the upper includes the number 20 to mark the anniversary.

Hypervenom GX will be available on October 12. Additional GX-inspired designs can be customized on NIKEiD.
